The Patrick County Cougar baseball team came into their April 8 game with the Bassett Bengals riding a five game win-streak. Solid pitching and timely hitting helped the Cougars to a 7-2 win, and kept the streak alive.
The pitching on both sides was outstanding in the first two innings, keeping both teams hit less. Bassett got things going in the top of the third, taking a 2-0 lead, and the Cougars responded in the bottom of the third. With men on second and third, a hard hit Jaiden Wilson grounder got through the infielders, driving in two runs. They added another run to take a 3-2 lead through three.
In the fourth, a Noah Jessup triple drove in David Lawson, extending the lead to 4-2. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Gavin Fain drove a fly ball over the Bengal right fielder, driving in three runs to increase the lead to 7-2.
Cougar pitching was solid the whole game, allowing just three hits on the night. Starter Jackson Horton went 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Zach Holt came on in relief, going three innings, striking out four, and Noah Jessup finished out the game, going an inning-and-a-third with four strikeouts.
“All three guys did a great job,” said Cougar head coach, Tal Swails. “Horton got his first start today. We’re glad to have him out there. We’re going to need him to make the run. Zach Holt did a great job in relief and Noah Jessup came in and closed the door. Great job by our pitchers.”
Swails likes what he’s seeing with his team as the season progresses. “They’re buying in to who they are, where their abilities are, what we can be good at, and how we can excel. That’s how you build a winning team. They’re doing great. I’m proud of them.”
