Michael “Mike” Gravely threw his hat in the ring and announced that he will seek the Mayo River District seat on the Patrick County Board of Supervisors in the November election.
Vance Agee also said he will seek the post as did incumbent Lock Boyce.
Gravely, who has not sought public office before, said he decided to run because he does not feel that he currently is being represented.
“This backlash, yelling and shouting is not the right way to represent us,” Gravely said. “I go to Henry County (Board of Supervisor) meetings, and everybody is very civil.”
Gravely, who owns Outdoor Entertainment LLC, said he understands the importance of civility and working together.
“If I yelled at my customers, I wouldn’t have many. Everybody that comes to me as a customer is my boss, and everybody in my district would be my boss” if he wins the November contest, Gravely said, adding that he would represent his constituents to the best of his ability.
Gravely said he moved his family to Patrick County from Henry County in 2000.
“I want to stay in Patrick County. I want to raise my kids in Patrick County, and I want there to be a Patrick County” that isn’t in debt, he said.
He was raised in Ridgeway by his grandparents Cleave Greenwood and Irene Cassady Greenwood, both Patrick natives. His grandfather, who lived in the Mayo River District while in Patrick County, and served in WW II.
Gravely said he spent most every Sunday in Patrick attending family functions, and “I was raised with Patrick County morals.”
His grandfather’s most important messages were always be honest and not lie or steal from anyone, Gravely said.
He also serves as as Sergeant At Arms of the Rotary Club of Stuart, is a member of the Patrick Springs Parks and Recreation Committee Board and a substitute teacher in the local school division. Gravely also participated in the Patrick County Leadership program.
He and his wife Monica live in the Nettle Ridge community with their children Kaden, 6, and Kaylee, 9.
