Tommy Earnest Vandergrift, age 82, of Ridgeway Va., passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019, after a long battle with diabetes. He was born on October 1, 1936 in Roanoke.

Tommy enjoyed hunting and gardening in his earlier years. Before retiring, he worked for Lawrence and Nester Distributing Company. He always had a joke or a funny antidote to share and loved to hang out with his buddies on the farm.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Robertson Vandergrift, three brothers, John H. Vandergrift, Jr., Jimmy Vandergrift, Leonard (Gus) Vandergrift and two sisters, Doris V. Creasy and Peggy V. Creasy.

Surviving are his wife Lois, of the home, and brothers Gary Vandergrift, Allen Vandergrift (Mary), both of Roanoke. Also surviving are his daughter, Wanda V. Mullins of Roanoke, and sons, John J. Vandergrift (Diane) of Roanoke and David W. Vandergrift (Lisa) of Elkton, Va. In addition, Tommy is also survived by his step children, Carlton Ashburn of York, SC, Mark Ashburn, Gail Ashburn and Tracey Shough of Martinsville, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Online condolences may be sent to www.moodyfuneralservices.com. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Diabetes Association or the local SPCA.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Palliative Care Unit at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the excellent care given to Tommy during his illness.
