Lane Taylor pitches for the Cougars
By Ashlee Mullis

The Varsity Baseball team lost a close game 1-3 to Carroll County on May 2. Lane Taylor got the start on the mound for the Cougars 6 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, with only one run being earned.  Offensively, the Cougars had five hits but couldn’t get a big one when it counted.

Jacob Mullis had a single, fielder’s choice double, while Taylor, Landon Augustine, Kelon Penn, and Taylor Swails each had a hit.

“It was a very well-played game on both sides. Sophomore Lane Taylor threw another really good game for us tonight.  We just couldn’t capitalize on opportunities to give him run support,” said Coach Tal Swails. “It was senior night. We have four special guys who will be missed!” Seniors include Landon Augustine, Josh Cockram, Tanner Epperson, and Colby Vernon.

The Cougar Varsity Baseball Team defeated Martinsville 10-1 at home on April 30.

Colby Vernon got the start on the mound and went a strong five innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking one, and striking out five. Taylor Swails finished the game going two scoreless innings on one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Cougars scored ten runs on nine hits lead by McCray Sawyers, Bryson Fulcher, and Lane Taylor who each picked up two hits. Colby Vernon drove in three.

“It was a much-needed win for us. It allowed guys who don’t get a chance to play, some quality time on the field,” Coach Tal Swails said.

The Varsity Baseball team lost on the road at Cave Spring 0-12 on April 29. Coach Tal Swails said, “We just got beat by a really solid high school baseball team. They are probably as good a high school hitting team top to bottom as I’ve seen in a long time. They just have no holes in the field. It matters not where you pitch it. They barrel up

everything.”
