The Virginia Quilt Museum will open Stitching Together History: 250 Quilts Commemorating the Commonwealth of Virginia on July 4.
The exhibition, which runs through Dec. 22, will feature 257 quilts created by fiber artists from across the United States. Each 20-by-20-inch quilt interprets a person, place, event or idea connected to Virginia’s history.
The exhibit is the result of a nationwide call for entries held in 2024. More than 275 quilts were submitted before a jury selected the final collection.
“Stitching Together History is an extraordinary exhibition commemorating the history of Virginia and West Virginia,” said Alicia Thomas, executive director of the Virginia Quilt Museum.
Thomas said the exhibit includes quilts that examine both difficult and uplifting aspects of history, along with works highlighting heroes, everyday citizens, natural landscapes and cultural traditions.
The exhibition coincides with the America250 and Virginia250 commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
A companion book published by Schiffer Publishing features the quilts and the stories behind them.
Located in the historic Silver Lake Mill in Dayton, the Virginia Quilt Museum is the official quilt museum of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Founded in 1995, the museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the quilting arts through exhibitions, educational programs and community engagement.
