Woolwine Elementary seventh grade students conducted water quality testing at the Jack’s Creek Bridge location of the Smith River on Thursday, October 20 in cooperation with the Trout in the Classroom program through the Dan River Basin Association.
Katie Slusher, Rozina Turner, and Cecilia Coutu monitored student groups while they collected, classified and identified macro-invertebrates from the river with the assistance of Wayne Kirkpatrick of the DRBA. The data collected showed excellent water quality at this test site of the Smith River.
Students were excited to try out their new hip waders that were purchased for the school by a generous supporter of the DRBA, Anna Lester of Clark Gas and Oil of Stuart. Lester met with student groups as they worked to identify their collected bugs and Kirkpatrick shared his expertise of macro-invertebrates as an extension lesson.
Students will conduct an additional water quality test in the spring of 2017.
