The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday night into Sunday.
A winter storm will impact the region beginning Saturday night through at least Sunday night. Precipitation will change from snow, to sleet, to freezing rain, and possibly back to snow or rain throughout the event.
This wintry mix will make travel difficult and dangerous, with total snow accumulations of up to 6 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze possible.
On Saturday, snow is expected mainly after 11 p.m. It could be heavy at times, with a low around 29 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent, with new snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
On Sunday, snow and sleet are forecast before 9 a.m., then freezing rain until 2 p.m. Rain is likely after 2 p.m. Snow could be heavy at times, with a high near 33. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch is possible, with new snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
A chance of rain showers and sleet before 11 p.m. Sunday night, followed by a chance of sleet. Cloudy, with a low around 30 degrees is expected. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
On Monday, a chance of snow and sleet remains in the forecast before 10 a.m., followed by a chance of rain and snow between 10 a.m. and noon, then a chance of rain after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 40 degrees is expected. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
