A Meadows of Dan woman was indicted Tuesday in connection with the death of her infant son.

Michaela Jae Barnard Wester was indicted on one count of first degree murder by grand jurors seated in Patrick County.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, but rather a grand jury’s finding that evidence exists to warrant a trial.

Wester’s infant son, Gunner Massey, died Jan. 3, 2016, according to previous reports.

Wester called the 911 center and said the infant was not breathing. He was transported to Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart, where he was pronounced dead as a result of respiratory arrest, according to previous reports.

An autopsy conducted at the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke found nothing suspicious at the time. The investigation was reopened in July after new evidence surfaced, according to authorities.

The charge was certified to the higher court following a preliminary hearing in April.
