A Woolwine man is being held without bond in connection with an alleged Friday night pursuit with a motorcycle, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

Casey James Hanson, 29, was charged by the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office with felony attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and multiple traffic charges. He was charged by the Virginia State Police with felony attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, Smith said.

The sheriff said the incident began around 11:15 p.m. on Friday, April 17, when Senior Deputy Andrew Kinney attempted to catch up to a motorcycle traveling east on Virginia 57, near Goblintown Road, at an alleged 100 miles per hour.

Kinney activated his blue lights and siren and the motorcyclist refused to stop, continuing into Henry County at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The motorcycle allegedly turned onto Trent Hill Drive and then onto Philpott Drive, with Kinney and other Patrick County units still in pursuit.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office became involved in Oak Level as the suspect allegedly continued to flee south on US 220.

The Virginia State Police became involved the pursuit at Bassett Forks.

Kinney and Senior Trooper Josh Cockerham performed a rolling roadblock in an attempt to slow the motorcycle down. While attempting the rolling roadblock, Cockerham’s vehicle was struck three different times before the motorcycle crashed just north of the state line.

Hanson was immediately taken into custody by Kinney and Cockerham.

There were no injuries, Smith said, however Cockerham’s patrol vehicle sustained significant damage, while Kinney’s patrol vehicle sustained minor damage.

Hanson is being held without bond in the Patrick County Jail.
