A write-in candidate for the Smith River District seat on the Patrick County School Board won Tuesday’s election.

Walter Scott “quite decidedly was the winner” of that race, Patrick County registrar Susan Taylor said Wednesday, following a tally of the write-in candidates.
With 728 write-in votes, Scott ousted incumbent J.D. Morse, who picked up 341 votes, Taylor said ballots showed.
Taylor said few changes were reported after completing a canvas of Tuesday’s ballot.
One change was reported in Willis Gap precinct, with 222 votes cast for John Adams in the Attorney General contest rather than the 223 initially reported, Taylor said.
There was a two point change in the 9th District House of Delegates contest,  with incumbent Charles Poindexter picking up 196 votes in the Central Absentee precinct, not the 198 initially reported, Taylor said.
Neither change affected the outcome.
At 47.5 percent, voter turnout Tuesday was slightly higher than the 40 to 45 percent projected, Taylor said.
“We had a really good turnout, ” she said.
