The American Cancer Society’s 2016 Relay for Patrick County was held on Saturday, May 14 with eight teams and 50 participants registered.
To date a total of $16,220 has been raised, which includes funds from a radiothon held at WHEO as well as a golf tournament held in honor of Denny Archer and Mike Shough.
Organizers wish to thank everyone who came out on what started out as a nice Spring day. After a short shower, strong winds blew in cooler temperatures to finish the night.
“Perhaps that is fitting, since that is how it is with someone battling cancer. Your life can be moving along peacefully and the storm clouds roll in when you are diagnosed with cancer. Then come the stormy days of surgeries and treatments, before we are blessed to enjoy happy, sunny days once more,” said Betty Conner, a long-time Relay organizer.
“We also thank our corporate sponsors, the ladies providing the food, entertainment for the event, and Jim Eanes for providing the sound system,” Conner said.
After the rain shower damped the luminary bags, volunteers were able to light them. When the clean-up detail arrived on Sunday morning there were several luminaries still burning.
The following luminaries were purchased.
