Applications are being accepted through May 31 at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) for the Gerald L. Baliles Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship and the Eleanor Saslaw Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship.
The Gerald L. Baliles Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship provides two awards of $2,500 to Virginia students. To be eligible, applicants must be first-time, full-time students; plan to enroll and attend PHCC in the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters; demonstrate academic excellence during high school and have a minimum 2.0 grade point average; and demonstrate potential for public service and a commitment to developing civic leadership.
Established in 2007, the Gerald L. Baliles Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship honors the former governor’s dedicated and distinguished career in public service and pays tribute to his outstanding leadership as a champion of education in Virginia.
The Eleanor Saslaw Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship provides one scholarship of $2,000 to a Virginia student. To be eligible, applicants must be first or second year students in good standing at PHCC, enrolled full-time, be a legal resident of Virginia, and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
Established in 2015, the Eleanor Saslaw Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship honors the professional counselor and former president of the Virginia Counselor’s Association. She served as a member of the Virginia State Board of Education (2004 to 2012) and as president (2010-2012). Governor McCauliffe appointed Saslaw to the State Board for Virginia’s Community Colleges where she serves as a liaison to Rappahannock and Patrick Henry Community Colleges.
