The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released the 2022-2023 Standard of Learning (SOL) test results last month, showing that Patrick County’s pass rates exceeded the average state pass rates in all subject areas:
English: PCPS – 84 State – 73 (+11 points above state average)
Writing: PCPS – 81 State – 65 (+16 points above state average)
Math: PCPS – 81 State – 69 (+12 points above state average)
Science: PCPS – 80 State – 67 (+13 points above state average)
History: PCPS – 78 State – 65 (+13 points above state average)
Patrick Schools Superintendent Jason Wood said, “Our overall performance improved in 2022-2023, and once again Patrick County Public School’s scores are a shining example for the rest of the state as Patrick County is ranked 9th in the commonwealth out of 131 school divisions.”
The VDOE distributed a release that Wood said “not only discusses concerning performance in much of the state but also the importance of in-person learning and especially the need for students to have good attendance in school.
“We know that Patrick County Public School provides one of the highest-quality educational opportunities in the state and our performance shows that and we want to continue to build on our success with the help of parents and students. Making sure our students attend school, so we can teach and care for all our students is one of the best ways families can help PCPS remain top in the state and ensure our students are successful.”
He added, “I am so thankful for all our employees and so proud of our students and families! From teachers and administrators to bus drivers, cafeteria workers, nurses, custodians, and everyone who works in our division, their dedication has paid off.”
Next month, when the state accreditation process factors in student growth from spring 2022 to spring 2023, Patrick schools expect an even greater reason for celebration.
Shannon Brown, Assistant Superintendent for Administration who is also in charge of state testing for the division, said, “These pass rates do not include adjusted scores for students who demonstrated growth in reading and math. These outstanding scores will only improve when growth is calculated next month for state accreditation.”
“Patrick County Public School’s SOL performance reflects the continuous hard work and dedication of our entire school family. Our hard-working staff always goes above and beyond in providing personalized learning and meeting the needs of our students,” said Andrea Cassell, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.
In the current school year, Cassell said, “Our focus continues to be on accelerating learning in all of our schools. Patrick County Public Schools continues to analyze specific student data to improve and provide the resources schools and students need. Our teachers and staff are driven and ready to ensure all of our students have the resources and support they need to truly thrive.”
