Mr. Avery Leo Dillon, age 89, of Stuart, VA passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. He was born on September 22, 1933, to the late Merton and Della Belcher Dillon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Marie Barbour, Jeanette Pendleton, Myrtle Hollingsworth, Jewell Haden, Green Dillon and Bobby Dillion. Avery was drafted into the United Corps of Engineering in 1954 and deployed to the Aleutian Islands, which is located within the Arctic Circle; part of his duties was constructing radar towers. He worked in timber and farming. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching NASCAR racing but truly loved his family and being Papa Avery to his grandchildren.

Avery is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Nancy Laura Lee Dillon of the home; one son, Bennie Dillon and wife Deborah; step grandson, Jerry Cochran, III and wife Sierra; six great grandchildren, Austin, Katylenn, Avery Grace, Aislinn, Finley and Maddox; five siblings, Allen Dillon and wife, Emogene, Percy Dillon and wife, Maxine, Lonnie Dillon and wife, Bonnie, Elva Dillon Fulcher, Jean Dillon Hughes and husband, Alvin; sister in-law, Claudia Dillon; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at the Woolwine Cemetery, on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. with military rites will be provided by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will welcome friends at the graveside from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
