Sixty students from across Virginia attended the 48th Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation District’s Youth Conservation Camp at Virginia Tech July 12-18. Throughout the week, participants learned about conservation through beekeeping demonstrations, fishery management with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, forestry hikes, tours of Virginia Tech and Kentland Dairy Farm, soil conservation demonstrations, hiking the Cascades, float/tubing down the New River at New River Junction, tour Virginia Tech’s Vet School, turfgrass management focused tour of Lane Stadium, learned about some Virginia critters, topography, and how to delineate watersheds and more.
Patrick SWCD was proud to be part of this year’s camp by sponsoring a local student to attend, Gavin Smith from Patrick County High School (PCHS).

For over 40 years, the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts has coordinated the week-long summer conservation camp for Virginia high school students (currently enrolled in grades 9th-12th) on the campus of Virginia Tech. The program brings together students for a week of learning about Virginia’s natural resources from conservation professionals and faculty from Virginia Tech. Most of the instruction is hands-on and outdoors.
