The Patrick County High School golf team competed in the final Piedmont District match of the year last week and won with a team score of 315.

The match, hosted by Magna Vista and played at Oak Hill Golf Course in Eden, N.C., saw the Warriors finish second with a team score of 329. Tunstall placed third with a 334 and Halifax carded a team score of 339. Bassett was fifth at 391.

Jarrod Burnette led the Cougars with a 72, one of his lowest scores this year. Daniel Smith was second one stroke back at 73, also one of his lowest scores of the season.

Evan Hopkins shot 82 and Thatcher Blankenship carded an 88.

Jarrod Burnette chips onto the green at a recent golf match.

Monday, the Cougars played at Draper Valley Golf Course in Wytheville for the Region 3A-D Golf Tournament. Eight schools qualified for tournament play prior to Monday’s Region 3A-D match by taking the lowest scores from “mini” tournaments/matches that area teams competed in earlier and sending the top qualifiers to Wytheville.

PCHS Coach Philip Steagall was extremely happy with the team’s final match team score and Burnette’s and Smith’s scores last week. “I am hoping that their play will continue when we travel to Draper Valley for regional play. They are hitting their stride at the right time of the season,” he said.
