Cougar Varsity Baseball team to take on Bulldogs in tournament

Patrick County High School’s Varsity Baseball team will begin the Piedmont District Tournament Monday, hosting the Martinsville Bulldogs at 6 p.m. at Cougar Field.

The team defeated Dan River 8-2 on Monday, May 9, and ended the regular season at 15-5, and are expected to have secured the 1 seed going into regionals. 

Jai Penn went the distance on the mound striking out 7, walking 2, allowing 2 runs and 0 earned runs. The Cougars were led at the plate by Camden Nowlin who went 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Nash Thompson was 2-4 with 2 RBIs, and Tucker Swails and Toby Perkins each had a hit and an RBI. The game was tight all evening.  The Cougars had a 3-2 lead through the 6th but broke away in the top of 7th when they scored 5 runs. Patrick County traveled to Floyd County May 11, getting a 6-1 win. Swails went 6 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 14 and walking none. 

Stuart Callahan pitched a clean 7th inning to finish out the game. Swails and Gilbert Hubbard led the Cougars at the plate with 2 hits each. Penn, Callahan and Thompson had 1 hit each.

Hubbard had 2 RBIs on the night. Thompson, Hunter Strole, and Jackson Horton each had 1 RBI.
