The Patrick County High School wrestling team competed in the Jordan Amos Dual Tournament at Tunstall High School Saturday and brought home a first-place trophy. The Cougars tied with the host team Tunstall with 3-1 records, but the Cougars won by virtue of the most points scored in the tournament.

Four Cougar wrestlers brought home championship medals; they include Alfredo Gutierrez (106 lbs.), Brian Lange (113 lbs.), Owen Smith (120 lbs.) and Ethan Rorrer (126 lbs.). All four wrestlers went undefeated in the tournament.

In the first match of the tournament, the Cougars defeated Liberty High School 56-24. Nine Cougar wrestlers picked up pins or forfeits in the match.

In the second match of the tournament, the Cougars defeated Halifax 60-24.

The Cougars defeated Hargrave Military Academy 54-30. In the final match of the day, PC lost to Tunstall in a close contest, 44-36.

Last Tuesday, the Cougars hosted a tri-match with Dan River and Floyd. PC beat Floyd 66-9; however, they lost to Dan River 45-30.

In the first match of the tri-, Dan River defeated Floyd 76-6.

“We faced a tough Dan River team Tuesday night; however, the last time we wrestled them, they blew us out of the water. This week, it was closer because we had our full lineup on the mat,” Coach Robert Cunningham said.

“Our guys just moved on from a good tri-match Tuesday to continue riding the momentum. We went 3-1 today (Saturday), but our loss to Tunstall was really close—it could have gone either way with just one or two matches,” he explained. “It was an improvement, nonetheless. We just have to keep on improving for the district tournament this weekend,” he said. “We’re looking to come out district champs! That’s the only thing there is,” Cunningham said.

The Piedmont District Wrestling Tournament is slated for Saturday at Martinsville Middle School on Cleveland Ave.
