The following request for information has been received by the Patrick County Genealogy Society.

  • I am Mary C. Caldwell of Mayville, N.Y. The Pendleton-Hylton and Cruise families are my grandmother Sally Pendleton Broyles’ line.

It is my understanding that William and Elizabeth Huberd (Hubbard) Pendleton were her grandparents. William may have lived at Rock Castle (Mt.?) headwaters of the Smith River in Patrick County. Are William and Elizabeth buried there on that farm? If so, can someone photograph the headstones of William and Elizabeth?

I am also looking for Moses Cruise and a lady named Betty. In the Cruise family there was an American Indian, maybe early 1880s, but I cannot find proof. Thank you to anyone who may have correct family records. Please respond to: Ms. Mary C. Caldwell, 58 Morris Street, Mayville, NY 14757-1309.

David Sheley comments: A search of the graves and cemeteries of Section IV, Northside-Smith River area (page 160A) of the book “Tombstone Inscriptions of the Cemeteries of Patrick County, Virginia” (revised and expanded), compiled by O.E.. Pilson shows these family names and burials with only rough rocks with no inscriptions.

Finding a female family member with only a first name is often considered an indication of Native American heritage. Perhaps a DNA test would show that? Maybe the gravesites/stones she is seeking are on findagrave.com? I am hoping other researchers or family members/descendants can help this lady.

The genealogy notice is a free cooperative effort of the Patrick County Genealogy Society and The Enterprise. Send queries to David A. Sheley, 4522 Dobyns Rd., Stuart, VA 24171 or famalpha@yahoo.com.
