Harley Abraham Walker Sr., of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2021 in Port Saint Lucie, Florida.
He was born in Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia on May 6, 1933. He was predeceased by his parents Ervin and Gertrude Walker, his devoted wife Peggy Wood Lily Walker, and one brother Harvey Leon Walker.
Surviving are two children, Cheryl Penn and Harley Walker, Jr.; siblings, Onie Kane and Jerry Walker; stepdaughter, Leigh Ann Moran (Mark); and two step-grandsons, Colin Moran and Sean Moran, who lovingly referred to him as “Poppa Harley”. Harley enjoyed being a grandfather and had many happy times with them.
Harley served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War, and afterward received a AAS degree from National Business College in Roanoke, VA. He worked as a Software Developer and Analyst in Information Systems, and was primarily responsible for the VISA Bank Card systems at Dominion Bank. After his retirement from the banking industry, he worked at Oakey’s North Chapel, and volunteered at the Presbyterian Community Center helping homelessness and poverty of underserved families in the Roanoke Valley. He was an active member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church and the Lion’s Club of the Roanoke Valley. Harley loved Nascar racing, and went to every Daytona 500 race with treasured friends for many years.
We would like to thank the many caregivers who cared for Harley during the last 6 years of his life, and a very special “Thank You” to James and Cassandra Gordon, where he lived in their VA-sponsored foster home for over 3 years and thought of him as family.
In recognition of Mr. Walker’s service to our country, a graveside service with military funeral honors is scheduled for family and friends July 23, 2021 at 11 AM at Bouldin Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery. If family and friends desire, donations may be made to the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, Va, or donations may be made to a church or charity of their choice in memory of Harley.
