obit BurnetteHelen Stanley Burnette, 90, of Martinsville, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 3, 2016.
She was born in Laurel Fork on January 8, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Everett (Ebb) and Irena (Renie) Stanley, who lived in of Laurel Fork. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Stanley Culler.
She attended school in Carroll County and graduated from a nursing program in Mount Airy, N.C. She moved to Martinsville and began employment at DuPont and married the love of her life in 1948. In subsequent years, she was employed by J.C. Penney, Penn-Haven Meats, and by Henry County Public Schools as a teaching assistant at Spencer-Penn Elementary School. She returned to work at DuPont and retired in 1985.
She had been an active member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church since the early 1950s and served the church in many capacities. She was a beloved and actively involved member of the Preston community.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 67 years and 10 months, Arlie E. Burnette of Martinsville; daughters, Joyce B. Webb of Ridgeway and Linda B. Fain and husband Gene of Martinsville; one son, Stanley M. Burnette and wife Dale of Spencer; one brother, Sherman Stanley of Meadows of Dan; and sisters, Avagene S. Terry and husband Melvin of Meadows of Dan and Mabel S. Barber and husband Allen of Martinsville. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Heather Webb, Landon Webb, Valarie W. Rich, Thomas Burnette, Danielle B. Morgan, Lauren Burnette, and Natalie McKenzie; two great-grandsons, Rylan and Parker Burnette; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Pence officiating. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Pleasant Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Frances Hundley, 3472 Dillons Fork Rd., Fieldale, Va., 24089.
