Janet Isabelle Wilber Bailey, age 83, of Stuart, died on Friday, August 12, 2016, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection.
She was born in Sidney, N.Y., on July 23, 1933 to the late Stanley R. Wilber and Mabelle Van Scoy Wilber. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Elisabeth Porter; two brothers, Clifford F. Wilber and Maurice G. Wilber; and four sisters-in-law, Florence Wilber, Wanda Wilber, Elsie Wilber and Mildred Wilber.
She served in the 14th Army WAC Band at Fort McClelland, Ala., for six years. She then drove a bus for Gilbertsville Central School in New York for 13 years and was a truck driver for Coventry Transport in Coventry, N.Y., for 10 years.
She was a member of the Eastern Star in Gilbertsville, N.Y., and a member of Butternut Valley Grange #1533 for over 60 years. She was also a member of the W.R.C. (Women’s Relief Corp.) of Gilbertsville.
Bailey was a former member of the first Baptist Church of Gilbertsville before moving to Woolwine. After moving to Woolwine, she was an active member of Ross Harbour United Methodist Church of the Elamsville community. She also drove a dump truck for six years for J.C. Joyce Trucking Co. in Patrick Springs.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Mabelle Lynne Porter and Gerald, of Mount Upton, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Amy L. Porter of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; one brother, Stanley H. Wilber of North Syracuse, N.Y.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; four-legged companions Tinker and Missy; special dog caregiver, Jesse Rupp; and other special friends, Glenn and Marcell Handy, Lee Roy and Betty Willard, Charlene Rakes, Susan “Sadie” Stein, Jane Layman and family, and Pastor Sandy Wright.
A memorial service will be held at Ross Harbour United Methodist Church today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. with Pastor Sandy Wright officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Otego, N.Y. The Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard will conduct a flag-folding ceremony at the church.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Ross Harbour United Methodist Church, c/o Cathy Adams, 35 Goblintown Road, Stuart, VA 24171.
