Gov. Abigail Spanberger on Wednesday marked the 61st anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid by criticizing recent federal healthcare legislation and outlining steps Virginia is taking to respond.

According to the governor’s office, changes included in H.R. 1 could affect Medicaid coverage for about 300,000 Virginians and reduce federal Medicaid funding to the state beginning in 2028. The administration also said it has launched online dashboards to monitor the impact of the changes and is working to help eligible residents maintain health coverage.

State officials said Virginia’s 2026-28 budget includes funding to support residents who lose health coverage and to establish a Medicaid reserve fund. Spanberger also announced a series of listening sessions with patients, healthcare providers and community organizations to discuss the law’s effects.

More information about Medicaid coverage changes is available through the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services.
