The Virginia State Corporation Commission has ordered data centers and other large electricity users to pay for transmission infrastructure built exclusively to serve their facilities, a move Gov. Abigail Spanberger said will save Virginia families and small businesses hundreds of millions of dollars.
The order follows a filing by the governor’s administration urging regulators to prevent residential and small-business customers from bearing the costs of transmission projects needed for large-load developments. Spanberger said the decision ensures data centers pay the full cost of infrastructure required for their operations and pledged to continue working with the General Assembly on policies addressing energy costs, environmental standards and local community concerns.
