Veterans will be honored by the American Legion Post# 105 and the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard during a Memorial Day service that is co-sponsored by Patrick Memorial Gardens, according to Clyde Thomas.

Veterans will be commemorated during the service which begins at 8:30 p.m., Monday, May 29.

The Rev. David Sparks, a Vietnam Navy veteran, is the guest speaker, said Thomas, who is a commander for both Post #105 and the honor guard.

The event will include additional speakers, as well a rendition of “Taps” and a 21-gun salute, Thomas said.

Luminaries to honor or memorialize veterans are now available for purchase, Thomas said. He added luminaries to honor the memories of deceased veterans will be placed along the right side of the driveway into Patrick Memorial Gardens.

Luminaries for those veterans who are being honored will flank the left side of the driveway, Thomas said.

Luminaries are can be purchased for $10 per veteran, according to Thomas. Organizers also are requesting that those who buy a luminary indicate whether the veteran is living or deceased.

Proceeds from the sale of luminaries will help fund other projects, including buying flags that are placed on the graves of veterans.

Other posts participating in the event are American Legion Post 105, VFW Post 8467 and VFW Post 7800, Thomas said.

He invited residents to “bring a lawn chair and enjoy the service.”

For additional information, call Thomas at (276) 930-2117; Gary Griffith at (276) 930-2708, or any member of the American Legion.

To order luminaries, mail $10 per veteran and information to: Gary Griffith, P.O. Box 77, Woolwine, Va. 24185.
