NOEL “MARK” HOLT
Noel “Mark” Holt, 60, of Concord, N.C., formerly of Stuart, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. He was born August 1, 1958, in Stuart, to the late Noel James Holt and the late Doris Lily Wood Holt. He was also preceded in death by his son Tyler James Holt.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Lawrence Holt of the home; daughter Kelly Denise Lawrence; son Andrew Scott Lawrence; granddaughter Kennedy Marie Kuykendall; brother Jimmy Holt and wife Darlene; sister Linda Moore; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was a man of God and had a strong faith. He was known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He was a hard worker and a respected leader at his workplace. He had a special bond with his granddaughter Kennedy, and a special affection for his dog Macy. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Connect Christian Church in Concord, N.C., and was officiated by Pastor Bob Wallace. Burial was at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, officiated by Pastor Frank Watkins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Make A Wish Foundation in Mark’s memory. ALMA C. JOYCE
Alma C. Joyce 96, of Bassett, passed away January 15, 2019, at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem. She was born on December 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Frank L. Collins and the late Pencie Martin Collins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Carl L. Joyce; son Pete Joyce; brother Lowell Collins; sister Esma Mills and son – in -law; John Adams. She was member of Orchard Drive Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters and sons- in -law, Sandra Adams, Carla Collins (Roger), Donna Dillon(Roger); seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three great – great grandchildren and sisters–in–law, Mary Bower and Ailene Collins. Funeral Services were conducted on Monday, January 21 in the chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with the Rev. Daryl Joyce and Pastor Ken Hoyer officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park. MARVIN GARLAND REDD
Marvin Garland Redd, age 73, of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Patrick County on June 1, 1945, to the late John Henry Redd and Elizabeth Foddrell Redd. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Avis Wright; and a brother, Henry Lane “Boley” Redd. He retired from DuPont and loved fishing, hunting, and reading. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and never met a stranger.
Surviving are his wife, Diane Dixon Redd of the home; one daughter, Stephanie Redd, of Ridgeway; one son, Dion Redd, of Martinsville; two grandchildren, Brittany Woods and husband, Brad, Deionna Redd; two great-grandchildren, Taelor Woods, Teagan Woods; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary Wallace and Hilda Redd, of Walnut Cove, N.C., Roger and Nancy Redd of Stoneville, N.C., Maurice and Faye Redd of Winston-Salem, N.C., Cephus and Denise Redd of Orville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held (today) Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Avery Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Redd Family Cemetery. ROY LINFORD BELCHER
Roy Linford Belcher, age 61, of Woolwine, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Patrick County on January 27, 1957, to the late Vernon Eugene Belcher and Eulah Mae Conner Belcher. He was a member of the Woolwine Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are three uncles, Kenneth Belcher of Floyd, Odell Belcher of Meadows of Dan, Landis Conner and wife, Bertha of Woolwine; and several cousins.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 18, 2019, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Shaun Draughn officiating. Burial was in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery. REBECCA (BECKY) CARTER SHREVES
Rebecca (Becky) Carter Shreves, age 76, of Glade Hill, passed away Friday, January 18, 2019. She was born in Martinsville on August 28, 1942, to the late Raymond Avery Carter and Vaughnie Maxey Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Carter; an infant sister, a step-daughter, Michelle S. Workman; a great grandson, Christian Placer; and her beloved dogs, Beaver and Sam. She grew up in Figsboro and graduated from Bassett High School in 1960. She worked at DuPont, was a CNA at Salem Hospital, Huff Cook Insurance, and was a co-owner of ETI of Martinsville. She was of a strong Baptist faith. Becky, also known as “Granny Beck” was a strong, feisty woman who wasn’t afraid to tell you what she thought or put you in your place when you needed it. She was a good ole country girl who wasn’t afraid of a hard day’s work. She was a great wife, mom, step-mother, granny, great granny, great great granny, aunt, sister, and in-law. She enjoyed caring for others, playing with her grandchildren, sharing stories of growing up on a tobacco farm, gardening and mowing grass, flowers, landscaping, remodeling and interior decorating, playing Rook with her friends, Candy Crush and Facebook, painting, talking on the phone, and her dog. People say her Christmas decorations belonged in magazines, her fried chicken was the best this side of Heaven, and her feisty spunk and laughter made their days. She never met a stranger, and within a few minutes of conversation could actually link anyone to her family tree. Over the years, she took care of many aunts, uncles, and grandchildren. She loved the Lord and knew she was headed for Glory. Before she passed, she said, “This isn’t goodbye but see ya later.”
Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Paul R. Shreves of the home; one daughter, Debbie Adkins-Foley and husband, Stanley of Snow Creek; one son, David Biggs and wife, Doris of Cherokee Village, Ariz.; four step-daughters, Melissa S. Freeze and husband, Tony of Harrisonburg, Crystal S. Naff and husband, Michael of Callaway, Jenny S. Flora and husband, Andy of Rocky Mount, Bethany S. Moore and husband, John of Staunton; special adopted grandchildren, Mandy M. Placer and husband, Ben of Sistersville, W. Va., Jamie Mathis of Fairmont, Michael Mathis of Clarksburg, WV; 11 grandchildren, Ridge Adkins, Rachael and Lauren Naff, Jacob Flora, Hannah and Sara Moore, Zach, Alyson, and Branden Placer, Roxanne McManamay, and J.W. Workman; five great grandchildren, Raustyn and Tiauna Mathis, Lexi Mathis, Nicole and Trevor McManamay; one sister, Maxine Wells and husband, George of Martinsville; a special niece, Robin Nuttall and husband, Mark of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three nephews, Kenneth, Stephen, and William Wells; and many cherished in-laws, family, and friends.
A memorial service was held Monday, January 21, 2019, at Collinsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Tracey Freeman officiating. GLENN ALEXANDRIA WOOD
Glenn Alexandria Wood, age 93, passed away January 18, 2019, at his home in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on July 18, 1925, to the late J. Walter Wood and Ada DeHart Wood. He was also preceded in death by his older brother, Garland Clay Wood. He was a sawmiller, a racecar driver, a race team founder and owner. Later in life, he was a gardener who loved to watch things grow, in particular, his family. He was of the Christian faith and a loving and devoted husband, daddy, grandpa and great grandpa.
He is survived by his wife, Bernece Moricle Wood, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Carol Wood, Len and Nancy Wood, all of Stuart; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Terry Hall of Stuart; two grandsons, Jonathan Wood and wife Amanda, Keven Wood; one granddaughter, Jordan Hicks and husband Michael; two great-grandsons, Riley Wood and Bailey Wood; two great-granddaughters, Giselle Hicks and London Hicks; three brothers, Ray Lee Wood, Delano Wood and Leonard Wood, all of Stuart; one sister, Crystal Wood of Woolwine; and several cousins.
Private family services were held. There will be guestbooks available to sign at both Moody Funeral Home in Stuart and The Wood Brothers Racing Museum in Stuart and anyone wishing to pay their last respects to Glenn are welcome to do so at the funeral home in Stuart from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 and from 8 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Friends – “more precious than silver or gold” – an old saying we’ve always held to be true but couldn’t realize until our darkest hours – the death of our daughter, sister, and mother, Misty Dawn Simmons Blevins.
