JAMES LYNWOOD CLARK, JR.

James Lynwood Clark, Jr., age 51, of Critz, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018, at Sovah Health in Danville.  He was born in Henry County to James Leonard Clark, Sr. and Earlene Baker Clark of Critz.  He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Eddie and Mary Baker; and his paternal grandfather, George Moir Clark.  James was a member of Shiloh Way of the Cross Church in Martinsville.  He loved his family and never met a stranger.  He loved to cut grass and help his father as they were two peas in a pod.  He was known for remembering birthdates of all who knew him.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Nichole Clark and Shannon Clark both of Martinsville; paternal grandmother, Ida Clark of Critz; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at Shiloh Way of the Cross Church with Bishop Earley Dillard officiating.  The burial was private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shiloh Way of the Cross Church, P.O. Box 5023, Martinsville, Va. 24115 or to Tatum Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church, 2070 Mountain View Loop, Stuart, Va. 24171. Online condolences may be sent to www.moodyfuneralservices.com.


GARY LEE COX

Gary Lee Cox, age 68, of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Patrick County on October 23, 194,9 to the late Hobert Lester Cox and Alice Gay Pace Cox. He was a member of Five Forks Wesleyan Church and was a truck driver for over 50 years. He volunteered with CCDF Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad for many years, and enjoyed meeting with friends for coffee at the Dry Pond Café.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anne Smith Cox of the home; two sons, Stephen Cox, of Stuart, Wayne Cox and wife, Danielle of King, N.C.; a daughter, Leanne Cox, of Patrick Springs; seven grandchildren, Brittany Keyser, Sarah Cox, Ariana Beasley, Ava Cox, Aaron Cox, Hayden Childress and Devin Cox; a brother and sister-in-law, Toby and Jane Cox, of Stuart; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dianna and Mike Vipperman, of Spencer, Mary Alice and Dempsey Payne, of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at Five Forks Wesleyan Church with Pastor Dave Henry, Rev. Gary Combs and Rev. Ricky Rogers officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Five Forks Wesleyan Church, 3778 Salem Hwy., Stuart, Va. 24171. CAROLYN ANN SEARS SMITH

Carolyn Ann Sears Smith, age 73, of Ararat, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at her home.  She was born in Walhalla, S.C. to the late Claude Edward Sears and Irene Carolyn Sears Smith on April 7, 1945. She grew up in Hickory, N.C. and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University with a BA in Mathematics in 1967. She was a caring and compassionate wife, mother, and teacher. Her generous heart knew no bounds; she gave freely to anyone in need.

She was survived by her husband, Ray Harden Smith; her son, Claude Edward Sears Smith and wife, Kelly McMillian Smith; her daughter, Natalie Paige Smith; grandchildren, Loren Rae Smith, Garret McRay Smith, and Carson Ray Stanford Smith; and sisters, Claudette Vantrice Tuttle and Mavis Ferrell Sears. In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Harden McRay Smith.

Family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Services on Thursday, September 6, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Wittnesses in Mount Airy, N.C.
