Eleven ecology Surry Community College students went on the field trip of a lifetime this summer with Biology Instructor Grayson Patton. The students studied the spruce-fir forests and tundra habitats of Maine and New Hampshire as well as the Highlands of Southern Appalachia.

“These areas are some of the most diverse and unique habitats North America has to offer, and to be able to see them first hand is an experience which can truly be life changing,” explains Patton. “The ecology course at Surry Community College provides each a unique opportunity to study ecological concepts in a remote and exciting field setting. I feel incredibly privileged to have an opportunity to lead student learning in such beautiful and significant environments.

Participatingstudents included: Eric Arvizu and Abigail Shepherd of Dobson; Corbin Caldwell of Mountain Park; Ruth Caudle and Robert “Bob” Alexander Moss of Lambsburg, Va.; Brayton Fields, Marissa Mabe, Brandon Noonkester, and Brandan Shur of Mount Airy, N.C.; and Lillian Knepp and Jayne Willard of Pilot Mountain, N.C.

Registration for the spring semester will begin Nov. 4 for new curriculum students at Surry Community College. For questions about college application, financial aid or class registration, contact Student Services at (336) 386-3264 or studentservices@surry.edu.
