Several computer and technology classes will be starting soon at various Surry Community College locations throughout Surry and Yadkin counties in North Carolina.\r\nComputer Skills Basics classes will be offered May 24 through July 21. This class is designed to be hands-on and user friendly for senior citizens and others who may have limited computer skills. Topics taught vary, but each session will include topics like: how to copy and paste, use spreadsheets, and develop Internet skills.\r\nStudents will be shown how to use the computer for things like their daily planner, address book, calendar, notepad, files, folders, papers and more. They will be shown how to use computers to watch videos, listen to music, organize photographs, send email, etc. Tuition is $127.\r\nClasses will meet each Tuesday and Thursday at two locations. Meet from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 114 of The Center for Public Safety, 1220 South State Street, Mount Airy, N.C., or from 1 to 4 p.m. in Room 218 of The Yadkin Center, 4649 Highway 601, Yadkinville, N.C.\r\nMicrosoft Windows, MS-Word and MS-Excel courses will be offered May 24 through August 4 in Room 114 of The Center for Public Safety, 1220 South State Street, Mount Airy and May 31 through July 28 in Room 218 of The Yadkin Center, 4649 Highway 601, Yadkinville.\r\nThis seven-week course will show students how to use: MS-Windows, MS-Word, and MS-Excel programs. Students will be introduced to basic computer terms, how to use the Windows controls, file management, word processing and spreadsheets while developing a moderate comfort level of basic computer skills.\r\nStudents will be shown how to work with files, create new documents, how to save and rename documents, how to work with text to include editing, typing, inserting, highlighting, and deleting text. Students will learn how to write formulas and use built-in functions to have Excel automatically calculate totals, averages, monthly loan payments, and other common business calculations. Both classes will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuition cost is $127.\r\nMicrosoft Excel 2013 classes will be offered beginning May 31 through July 28. Learn the basics of Microsoft\u2019s spreadsheet program. Training includes basic spreadsheet building. The class will focus on everything from formatting and writing simple formulas to writing more complex formulas and functions.\r\nThis class offers the skills that employers desire for the workplace, as well as skills beneficial to the home user. This class may lead to Microsoft Office Specialist Certification. The class will be held each Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 114 of The Pilot Center, 612 East Main Street, Pilot Mountain, N.C. Tuition is $127.\r\nTechnology Awareness classes will be offered May 31 through August 2. This course provides employability skills training for unemployed and underemployed adults.\r\nThe curriculum framework and the content of the instructional materials should focus on the following topics: developing a moderate comfort level of basic computer-use skills, using technology in developing and implementing job search strategies, researching career and occupational information, compiling and developing employment related documents (resume, cover letters, applications and electronic employment portfolios), accessing governmental and educational resources, assessing technology literacy, understanding the impact of social networking on employment, and emphasizing the role of technology in the workplace.\r\nThe class will be meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at two locations: from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Pilot Center, 612 East Main Street, Pilot Mountain or from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Yadkin Center, 4649 Highway 601, Yadkinville.
