Local residents can come together for a powerful day of action on Wednesday, March 16 by attending a “Big Event” hosted by STEP, Inc. at the Early Inn at The Grove in Rocky Mount from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is part of the Roanoke Valley Gives fund-raiser and will feature live music, games, and refreshments.
While attending the event, which is free and open to the public, guests will be encouraged to support STEP by going online to make a donation. Funds raised will be used to help the community action agency continue its services and programs to eliminate or reduce conditions of poverty as they affect the residents in the counties of Franklin, Patrick, Henry, Bedford, and Pittsylvania, and the cities of Martinsville and Danville.
Services offered by STEP include Early Head Start and Head Start, youth services (LIFES Academy, Project Discovery, Youth On the Move), senior services (Meals on Wheels, transportation), supportive services (re-entry, homelessness, housing), weatherization, and financial services (tax preparation assistance, financial education, individual development accounts).
Examples of how donations help include: $50 provides transportation for a medical visit; $100 provides materials to build a wheelchair ramp for a disabled veteran; $250 delivers Meals on Wheels for a home-bound senior citizen for two months; and $500 feeds a disadvantaged child for six months.
“We are so grateful for the support our community gives. Without it, we would not be able to serve as many individuals and families in need,” said executive director Bill Loope. “Each year we serve about 3,400 people. We can increase the scope and impact of our work with a great turnout on March 16.”
The Big Event is sponsored by P.A.C. Interiors and Floor Fashions, Inc.
