Save money on back to school, hurricane preparedness and certain energy saving appliances during the three-day sales tax holiday that starts Aug. 4 and runs through Aug. 6, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation.

During the sales tax holiday, sales tax is not paid on certain qualifying school supplies, such as clothing and footwear.

Qualified school supplies include those that are $20 or less per item and qualified clothing and/or footwear priced at $100 or less per item.

Hurricane preparedness items may include any new or used 1) portable generators with a sales price of $1,000 or less per item; 2) gas-powered chainsaws with a sales price of $350 or less per item; 3) chainsaw accessories with a sales price of $60 or less per item; and 4) other specified hurricane preparedness items with a sales price of $60 or less per item.

Energy Star and WaterSense items include certain specified new or used items that: 1) have been designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy as meeting or exceeding each such agency’s requirements under the Energy Star or WaterSense programs; 2) are priced at $2,500 or less per item; 3) are purchased for noncommercial home or personal use; and 4) are affixed with an Energy Star or WaterSense label.
