Ulysses Vernon Beasley, 84, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday night, September 28, 2016, at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living Facility.
He was born November 13, 1931, in Patrick County, one of four children born to the late Walter Reid and Velvie Dunkley Beasley. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Pontes; a sister, Iva Surratt; and a brother, Moyer Beasley.
Vernon served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. As a result of his bravery and commitment, he was decorated with a Purple Heart after receiving multiple injuries.
Affectionately known as “Doodle,” he worked as a meat cutter at Food Fair in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Lowes Foods in Mount Airy.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annie Ruth Linville Beasley of the home; one daughter, Lisa Harris of Mount Airy; one son, Greg Beasley of Mount Airy; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Bernie Beasley of Statesville; N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Friday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with the Rev. Freddie Bonds officiating. Burial was at Skyline Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Memory Care Unit at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living Facility, 1297 Galax Trail, Mount Airy, N.C., 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, N.C. 27030.
